Why this applies to Aripiprazole

Aripiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist with goldthread and your aripiprazole (Abilify). Your body uses two liver enzymes, CYP3A4 and CYP2D6, to break aripiprazole down and clear it out. Goldthread's main compound, berberine, may slow CYP3A4 a bit. If that enzyme works slower, aripiprazole could clear less quickly and build up slightly, which can mean stronger effects and more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness or feeling jittery (akathisia), dizziness, or nausea.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern from lab work, not something proven in real people, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since aripiprazole is a daily medicine that affects your brain, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding goldthread. Don't change your dose on your own.
