Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for Technivie. The berberine in goldthread may gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps clear part of this combo (especially the paritaprevir piece). In theory, blocking that pathway could let drug levels creep up. Worth knowing, though: this medicine already contains ritonavir, which is a strong CYP3A4 blocker on purpose, so goldthread on top of it is a small, mostly theoretical extra nudge.

If levels did rise, you might notice more nausea, tiredness, itching, or trouble sleeping, and liver enzymes are something your team already watches closely. This hasn't actually been reported in people, so don't panic. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding goldthread.

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
