Cyclobenzaprine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist: your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear cyclobenzaprine out of your system. Goldthread contains berberine, which in lab tests seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does the same in people, cyclobenzaprine could hang around longer and build up, which might make its usual side effects more noticeable, things like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and that foggy, heavy-eyed feeling.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves in the lab, and it hasn't actually been reported in real patients. So it's worth a quick heads-up rather than alarm. If you'd like to use goldthread while on cyclobenzaprine, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how sleepy you feel.

What Is Cyclobenzaprine Used For?

Brand names: Cyclobenzaprine, Flexeril, Cycloprine

Cyclobenzaprine tablets and extended-release capsules are used alongside rest and physical therapy to relieve muscle spasm caused by acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions — easing pain, tenderness, and limited movement. This use is intended for short-term treatment only (up to 2–3 weeks).

Tonmya, the sublingual (under-the-tongue) form of cyclobenzaprine, is separately indicated for the treatment of fibromyalgia in adults. It is not the same as the oral tablet or capsule formulations.
