Zolpidem Tartrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the simple version for zolpidem (Ambien). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this sleep medicine out of your body. Berberine, the main active compound in goldthread, may slow that same enzyme down a bit, at least in lab studies. If it does, zolpidem could leave your system more slowly and build up a little, which can mean a stronger sleeping effect: more next-morning grogginess, dizziness, unsteadiness, or trouble waking up fully.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical. It has not actually been reported in people, and it is based on how berberine behaves in the lab, not real patients. Still, since zolpidem already makes you drowsy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand name: Ambien

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
