Why this applies to Pantoprazole

Pantoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for pantoprazole (Protonix). Your body clears this acid-reducing medicine using liver enzymes, mainly one called CYP2C19, with a smaller hand from CYP3A4. Goldthread's main compound, berberine, may gently slow down CYP3A4 in lab studies. If that happens, pantoprazole could clear a bit slower and build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual effects, things like headache, an upset stomach, dizziness, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on test-tube pharmacology, and it hasn't actually been reported in real people taking pantoprazole. Pantoprazole is also a pretty forgiving drug, so a small shift usually isn't a big deal. Still, if you'd like to use goldthread regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Pantoprazole

What Is Pantoprazole Used For?

Brand names: Protonix, Pantoloc, Protonix IV

Pantoprazole delayed-release tablets and oral suspension are used in adults and children 5 years and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE) — damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid — and to relieve GERD symptoms short-term (up to 8 weeks). In adults, they are also used to maintain that healing and reduce heartburn relapse, and to treat conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) Syndrome.

Intravenous (IV) pantoprazole — given by injection or infusion in a clinical setting — is approved in adults for short-term treatment of GERD with a history of erosive esophagitis (up to 10 days) and for pathological hypersecretory conditions including ZE Syndrome. PROTONIX I.V. is also approved for GERD/EE in pediatric patients 3 months and older (up to 7 days). IV pantoprazole is not approved for treating upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
