Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for bexarotene (Targretin): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down and clear it out. The berberine in goldthread may gently slow that same enzyme. If clearance slows, more bexarotene can linger in your body, which could nudge up its effects and side effects.

With bexarotene, that might mean things like higher blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol), low thyroid levels, headache, or low white blood cell counts becoming more noticeable. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on lab thinking, and hasn't actually been reported in people. Still, since this is a cancer medicine that's carefully dosed, please don't add goldthread without checking with your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
