D.L. Duo-Dophilus is a three-ingredient probiotic capsule.
The active ingredients are Acidophilus (a live beneficial bacterium), FOS (a type of fiber that feeds good bacteria), and Bifidus (another beneficial bacterium). These are supported by inactive ingredients including gelatin, cellulose, and vegetable stearate, which form and hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Acidophilus has been studied for several digestive and immune concerns. The data shows it's possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For atopic disease (allergic conditions), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, because it contains live organisms, there's a theoretical concern it could cause infection in certain patients — though most documented cases appear to occur in people with specific underlying conditions.
Orally, taking it may occasionally cause mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea; these are uncommon. Rarely, rash and itching have been reported, though it's unclear whether the probiotic itself or another ingredient was responsible.
During pregnancy, Acidophilus is rated possibly safe, though data are limited. We don't have pregnancy or lactation safety information on file for FOS or Bifidus.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
