What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dandelion root powder. There are no other active ingredients and no inactive fillers listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on dandelion root for its intended uses is incomplete. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for joint pain, tonsillitis, or postoperative swelling and pain.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Dandelion root is generally well tolerated when eaten as food, though supplement-strength doses are less studied. The most common side effects are diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
Because it can cause allergic reactions—including anaphylaxis in sensitive people, especially those allergic to ragweed and related plants in the daisy family—ask your doctor before you start if you have plant allergies. Safety data while breastfeeding is limited, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check your medications with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelets), diabetes drugs, potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills), quinolone antibiotics, lithium, or drugs broken down by CYP1A2 or glucuronidation pathways. Dandelion root may increase bleeding risk, lower your blood sugar, raise potassium to unsafe levels, or change how your body handles these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Dandelion root powder may help with certain conditions, but the evidence in our data is too limited to say how well it works. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, water pills, or certain other drugs, check your medications against the tool on this page and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement.
If you're allergic to ragweed or related plants, be cautious.

Dandelion, Powder monograph & interactionsDandelion Root Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dandelion Root Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection can interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs): dandelion root may increase your risk of bruising and bleeding because lab work shows it can slow how your platelets clump together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Dandelion also interacts moderately with diabetes medications—it may lower your blood sugar further, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)—and with potassium-sparing water pills, since dandelion is high in potassium and could lead to dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). It may increase levels of certain medications broken down by your liver's CYP1A2 enzyme, affect how your body clears drugs processed through glucuronidation (a liver detoxification step), reduce absorption of quinolone antibiotics (a class of oral antibiotics), and theoretically interfere with lithium levels through its diuretic properties.
Altogether, these interactions span 457 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of yours are affected, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

For each ingredient in Dandelion Root Powder with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dandelion, Powder
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
