Digest Basic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Enzymedica
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Digest Basic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Digest Basic by Enzymedica
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Digest Basic contains 11 active enzymes designed to help break down food during digestion. Three of them are well-studied: protease breaks down protein, lipase breaks down fat, and lactase breaks down the sugar in milk.
The others—amylase, cellulase, invertase, glucoamylase, alpha-galactosidase, xylanase, pectinase, and maltase—target different carbohydrates and fiber. The product also contains two inactive ingredients: cellulose and water.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
For lactase, the evidence shows it is effective for lactose intolerance. For the other active ingredients—protease, lipase, and the remaining enzymes—we do not have effectiveness ratings established in our data.
Lipase and lactase have also been studied for inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, colic, and prematurity, but the evidence is insufficient to rate them for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Protease, lipase, and lactase are generally well tolerated in most adults, though digestive upset or allergic reactions are possible with any of them. Rare cases of contact dermatitis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis have been reported with lactase and protease exposure, primarily in occupational or powdered-supplement settings.
For pregnancy, the safety data on protease advises against use unless prescribed, while lipase and lactase have limited data—talk with your doctor before regular use in pregnancy. During breastfeeding, protease and lipase are not recommended without medical advice, though lactase is likely safe; lipase acts only in the gut, so ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

Digest Basic is a straightforward digestive-enzyme blend that may help if you have trouble breaking down certain foods—especially milk sugar. It's generally well tolerated, though people with serious digestive conditions should check with their doctor first.
