Digest Gold contains 14 active digestive enzymes. The three with the most established roles are protease (breaks down protein), lipase (breaks down fat), and lactase (breaks down lactose in dairy).
The other 11 — amylase, cellulase, xylanase, hemicellulase, invertase, maltase, glucoamylase, pectinase, alpha galactosidase, and beta glucanase — help your body process different carbohydrates and fibers. The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and water.

Strong evidence
The evidence is strongest for lactase: it's rated effective for lactose intolerance. For the other two enzymes we have data on — protease and lipase — the evidence for digestive conditions like inflammatory bowel disease and indigestion (dyspepsia) is insufficient to say whether they work.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Protease, lipase, and lactase are generally well tolerated in most adults, though digestive upset or allergic reactions are possible. Protease carries a caution: rarely, occupational exposure to airborne proteolytic enzymes has triggered allergic rhinitis or asthma in sensitive people — though that's usually from industrial settings, not supplements.
Lipase has a similar caution for people with serious digestive conditions, who should use it only under medical guidance. Lactase has one reported case of contact dermatitis and allergic rhinitis in a worker exposed to powdered lactase.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, lactase is rated likely safe; protease and lipase both have insufficient data, so talk with your doctor before using them regularly if you're pregnant or nursing.
