What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: dong quai extract in a 4:1 concentration, delivering 450 mg per capsule. Dong quai (also called Chinese angelica) is a plant root traditionally used in herbal medicine.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water, which are inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for dong quai isn't established in the data we hold for the conditions listed here. The effectiveness ratings for iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, coronary heart disease, migraine headache, and atopic dermatitis (eczema) are all insufficient, meaning current research doesn't reliably show whether it works for these uses.
If you're considering this product for a specific health concern, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Dong quai is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, with the most common side effects being burping and flatulence. However, it may increase your bleeding risk and can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so use it cautiously.
Rare occupational exposure has triggered allergic asthma and rhinitis in sensitive people. Additionally, dong quai contains compounds known to be carcinogenic, though it's unclear whether the amounts in this product at typical doses would pose a cancer risk over time.
During pregnancy, the safety data advises against use because dong quai may stimulate the uterus and affect bleeding. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so it's best avoided.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking Dong Quai 450 mg 4:1 Extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinners, anticoagulants, or blood clotting-prevention medications (antiplatelets) — the risk of increased bleeding is Major with warfarin and Moderate with other blood-thinning drugs. Also check if you use any estrogen-based medications or hormone replacement therapy, since dong quai may interfere with them.
Your pharmacist or doctor can review your exact medications and help you decide if this product is right for you.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is for people interested in dong quai's traditional uses, but you'll want to be cautious if you take any blood thinners, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, or hormone replacement therapy — the interaction risk is real and potentially serious. Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dong Quai 450 mg 4:1 Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dong Quai 450 mg 4:1 Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection has documented interactions through its dong quai extract with blood thinners and hormone medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a prescription blood thinner: case reports show that dong quai can boost warfarin's effects and raise your bleeding risk. One case documented a significant increase in blood thinning measures after just 4 weeks at the product's dose.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Dong quai may also increase bleeding risk if you take other blood thinners or blood clotting-prevention drugs (anticoagulants or antiplatelets), though the research is mixed. Animal studies point to compounds in dong quai that thin blood, and some human reports support this concern.
Additionally, dong quai has estrogen-like activity, so it may theoretically interfere with hormone replacement therapy by competing for how your body processes those hormones.
Although this product contains just one active ingredient, these interactions span 163 individual medications. Before you add this to your routine, run your exact blood thinners, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, and any estrogen-based medications through the interaction checker on this page, then confirm the results with your own doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Dong Quai 450 mg 4:1 Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dong Quai extract
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with warfarin.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of dong quai with warfarin can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding. In one case, after 4 weeks of taking dong quai 565 mg once or twice daily, the international normalized ratio (INR) increased to 4.9. The INR normalized 4 weeks after discontinuation of dong quai.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.
Estrogens
Theoretically, dong quai may reduce the effects of estrogens.
Dong quai has estrogenic effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of dong quai might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
