What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: 10 mg of lycopene per softgel capsule. Lycopene is a red pigment found naturally in tomatoes and other red plants; it's also included here as a tomato extract among the inactive ingredients.
The softgel itself is made from gelatin, soybean oil, corn oil, vegetable glycerin, and yellow beeswax.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lycopene has been studied most for prostate cancer, where it's rated possibly effective — meaning there's some evidence it may help, but more research is needed to be sure. For bladder cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol, the evidence is either insufficient to say or points away from benefit.
Data on its use for exercise-induced asthma and ALS is too limited for us to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects from the supplement are gastrointestinal — diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and loss of appetite.
One case of chest pain was reported in a pregnant woman taking a different lycopene product, though whether lycopene caused it is unclear. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, food amounts of lycopene are fine, but supplement safety data is too limited.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a lycopene supplement if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — including warfarin, apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, aspirin, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, or similar medications. Lycopene may increase your bleeding risk when combined with these.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in lycopene for prostate health and you don't take blood thinners, this is generally well tolerated. If you're on any anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug — whether prescription or over-the-counter — check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
And if you have a sensitive stomach, start low and watch for gas or loose stools.

Double Strength Prosta-Guard Lycopene 10 mg by Vitamin World Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vitamin World's Double Strength Prosta-Guard Lycopene 10 mg does interact with one category of medications.
The lycopene it contains may increase bleeding risk if you're taking blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, apixaban, aspirin, or clopidogrel). Lab research shows lycopene has antiplatelet effects — meaning it may make your blood less likely to clot — and combining it with medications that do the same thing could theoretically tip the balance too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the risk is moderate rather than severe, this is worth a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before you start, especially if you're on any blood-thinning medication. Altogether, these interactions span 122 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected, and let your healthcare provider know you're considering this supplement.
