Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Fat Erase contains one active ingredient: LipoSan Ultra Chitosan, a fiber derived from shellfish shells. Chitosan works in your digestive tract by binding to fat and cholesterol, which may help reduce how much your body absorbs.

The capsule itself is made from gelatin, and the inactive ingredients include succinic acid and rice powder.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: weight management and fat absorption blocking.
  • We looked for evidence on: Obesity, Hypercholesterolemia, lipid metabolism, dietary fat binding.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Chitosan is rated "Possibly Effective" for Obesity (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Chitosan is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Hypercholesterolemia.

The evidence for chitosan in Fat Erase is mixed. For obesity and postoperative recovery (healing after surgery), the data suggests it may be effective—though the quality of research is limited.

For high blood pressure, there's also possibly effective evidence. For Crohn disease and dry eye, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chitosan is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality safety data is limited. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, gas, stomach discomfort, and nausea.

Some people report steatorrhea (excess fat in stools). One person with kidney failure reported itching during treatment, though it's unclear whether chitosan caused it.

Because chitosan is made from shellfish, anyone with a shellfish allergy should avoid it. The safety data isn't adequate for pregnancy or breastfeeding—the facts advise against use in both cases.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for your individual situation.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chitosan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take Fat Erase, double-check your medications with your doctor or pharmacist if you use warfarin (blood thinner)—chitosan may increase your bleeding risk. Also flag acyclovir (antiviral) or any other prescription medication you're on.

No interactions are documented for the inactive ingredients we hold data for.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Fat Erase might be worth considering if you're looking at a weight-loss supplement backed by some limited evidence. But if you take warfarin, acyclovir, or any other prescription drugs, you need to clear it with your own doctor or pharmacist first—the interactions here can be real.

Also steer clear if you're allergic to shellfish, pregnant, or breastfeeding.

General Statements

If you've ever heard of chitosan, you might know of its positive benefits. However, not all chitosan is created equal. Under laboratory conditions, regular chitosan products take up to two hours to fully dissolve in your stomach, making it mostly ineffective. By the time regular chitosan dissolves, most of the dietary fat will have already been processed and absorbed into the body. Fat Erase, on the other hand, uses a patented form of chitosan (LipoSan Ultra) that has been processed to increase its solubility in stomach acid in 3-5 minutes instead of two hours as for other chitosan products. With this improvement, Fat Erase is able to bind almost three times as much fat as the regular and high density products on the market. That's because the true benefit of Fat Erase occurs in the digestive tract. When taken at mealtime, its extremely fast solubility makes it available to complex with dietary fat for almost the entire time (1.5 to 2 hours) that the ingested food is in the stomach. By the time the fat/chitosan emulsion reaches the small intestine and begins to gel, Fat Erase has had the opportunity to complex far more fat -- up to 3 times more -- than regular chitosan, which still may not be fully dissolved. The complexed fat is trapped in the gel and protected from enzymatic (lipase) breakdown into absorbable free fatty acids. This trapped fat is now unavailable for absorption and is effectively removed from the body as waste. Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trials -- the gold standard of scientific study -- have shown promising results for this patented form of chitosan on weight loss. In one study of 59 overweight and mildly obese women, both mean weight and BMI in the treatment group significantly decreased compared to baseline over 8 weeks without the benefit of a reduced caloric diet or exercise. While the placebo group gained 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs.), the treatment group lost 1 kg (2.2 lbs.) -- a 5 lb. difference!

Potency Purity Guaranteed Quality

Fat Erase's fast-acting properties make it easy to take right at mealtimes. With our busy lives today, we no longer have the time to remember to take a product an hour before we eat like other chitosan products. Fat Erase gives you the convenience to incorporate the positive benefits of chitosan into your regular weight management routine. When it comes to personal eating patters, we know that it can be extremely difficult to chage our individual habits. While experience tells us that we don't need another new diet that doesn't work, we do need help. Taking only 1-2 grams of Fat Erase per day in conjuction with a responsible diet and exercise program can be just the tool we need to have a realistic chance of taking control of our fat consumption -- and our weight.

A double-blind, placebo controlled study involving 59 overweight women taking 3 capsules of the active ingredient in Fat Erase before meals each day, showed a significant weight loss differential of 5 pounds over an 8 week period. This modified form of chitosan binds 3 to 5 times more fat than other varieties of chitosan. Due to its quick action, it can be taken at meal time for added convenience. Other generic chitosans need to be taken 30-60 minutes before meals.* Use with a sensible diet and exercise program.

Binds to dietary fat

When it comes to dieting, we all know that we need to reduce not only our overall consumption of food, but also our total fat intake. We also know that if it tastes good, it has to be loaded with fat. So even if we eat less of the foods that we like, we are still consuming too much fat. Sometimes the hardest part of dieting is having to substitute lowfat or fat-free foods that have less flavor for the ones we love. Now you don't have to suffer through a bland diet or lose momentum on your weight loss plan due to one little slip up. With Fat Erase, you can indulge occassionally in your favorite fatty foods and literally erase its detrimental effect on your weight.

Reduce Calories Absorbed From Dietary Fat* Fat Erase binds with dietary fat from your favorite foods, reducing calories from being absorbed by the body.

Fat Erase Diet Chitosan 500 Mg

LipoSan Ultra

Fat Erase is made of chitosan, a dietary fiber that binds fats and oils and naturally eliminates them from the body -- as if you had never eaten them. The basic raw material to make chitosan is chitin, the animal kingdom's version of plant cellulose, extracted from the shells of shrimp, crabs and lobster.

It features LipoSan Ultra chitosan, the same ingredient shown to be effective in clinical studies.

LipoSan Ultra Chitosan2 drug types · 3 drugs

Acyclovir (Zovirax)

Chitosan can reduce the absorption of acyclovir, potentially increasing the risk for treatment failure.
Clinical research in humans shows that taking chitosan along with acyclovir 200 mg reduces acyclovir absorption. Concomitant administration of chitosan 400 mg or 1000 mg reduced the acyclovir area under the curve (AUC) and peak plasma concentration by about 30% and 40%, respectively, compared with control. Concomitant administration with chitosan 1000 mg also increased time to peak concentration from 1 hour to 2 hours. In vitro research suggests that the mechanism for reduced absorption is due to acyclovir entrapment in chitosan-mucus complexes, which reduces intestinal absorption.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, chitosan might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
In a case report, a patient taking warfarin had a significantly increased international normalized ratio (INR) after starting chitosan 1200 mg daily. The INR normalized after chitosan was discontinued and vitamin K was administered. The patient once again started taking chitosan and again had a significant increase in INR. The INR stabilized again once chitosan was discontinued. Researchers theorize that this interaction might occur because chitosan decreases absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin K, which could increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.

Fat Erase by Fitness Labs: Common Questions

Does Fat Erase by Fitness Labs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Fat Erase has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Fat Erase contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is chitosan safe for people with shellfish allergies?
No. Chitosan is derived from shellfish shells, so anyone with a shellfish allergy should avoid it. Let your doctor or pharmacist know about any shellfish sensitivity before taking this product.
Can I take Fat Erase while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data isn't sufficient for either pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the facts advise against use in both cases. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation and whether this product is appropriate for you.
What stomach side effects should I expect?
The most common ones are constipation, diarrhea, gas, stomach discomfort, and nausea. Some people also report excess fat in their stools (steatorrhea). These typically happen short-term, but everyone's different.
Does Fat Erase actually help with weight loss?
For obesity, the evidence is 'possibly effective'—meaning there's some research support, but the quality is limited. It's not a proven slam-dunk. Results vary, and it works best alongside diet and exercise.
Will chitosan interfere with my warfarin?
Yes. Chitosan may increase your bleeding risk on warfarin, and at least one patient had a dangerous rise in clotting time after starting it. If you take warfarin, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before taking Fat Erase.
