Fennel is generally well tolerated when taken orally. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal discomfort, photosensitivity (sun sensitivity), and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

A rare serious side effect—seizures—has been reported but is uncommon. Some people develop fennel allergies; one case describes an 11-year-old who had breathing difficulty and wheezing after fennel toothpaste exposure.
