Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This powder contains one active ingredient: fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), a type of carbohydrate that acts as a prebiotic — it's meant to feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut. The product also contains fructo-oligosaccharides as an inactive ingredient.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Fructo-oligosaccharides (fos)'s own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: prebiotic food for friendly bacteria.
  • We looked for evidence on: Constipation, Dysbiosis, Irritable bowel syndrome, Inflammatory bowel disease.
  • The closest evidence on file: Fructo-oligosaccharides (fos) is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for FOS isn't yet established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, traveler's diarrhea, or high cholesterol.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means rigorous trials haven't settled the question yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

FOS is generally well tolerated in the amounts you'd get from food. At supplement doses, though, the safety data is thin, so talk with your doctor before you start.

The main side effects are gastrointestinal: abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and constipation. Interestingly, a review of eight small studies found that FOS at doses between 2.5 and 15 grams daily for up to 8 weeks didn't increase these symptoms more than a placebo did — but individual responses vary, and higher doses are more likely to cause gas and bloating.

FOS Fructo-Oligosaccharides by Higher Nature: Common Questions

Does FOS Fructo-Oligosaccharides by Higher Nature interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in FOS Fructo-Oligosaccharides. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
FOS Fructo-Oligosaccharides contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will FOS give me gas and bloating?
It can, especially at higher doses. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and intestinal sounds. Interestingly, a review of clinical studies found these weren't more common on FOS than on placebo — but that doesn't mean you won't feel them. If you do get symptoms, they're usually mild at doses under 10 grams a day.
Is FOS safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
We don't have enough safety data on file to say either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding — they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
Does FOS actually work for constipation or cholesterol?
The evidence isn't clear yet. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether FOS helps with constipation, diabetes, cholesterol, or the other conditions it's marketed for. More rigorous research would help answer that question.
What exactly is FOS and what's it supposed to do?
FOS stands for fructo-oligosaccharides — it's a type of carbohydrate that acts as a prebiotic, which means it's meant to feed the beneficial bacteria living in your gut.
Are there any fillers or other ingredients in this powder?
The ingredient list shows fructo-oligosaccharides both as the active ingredient and listed among the inactive ingredients in this powder. Beyond that, the full breakdown of other inactive ingredients isn't detailed in the facts we have.
