Garcinia Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Garcinia against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic Garcinia (Garcinia cambogia) dried fruit liquid extract. Garcinia is sourced as a dried fruit and prepared as a liquid extract form.
The only inactive ingredient listed is menstruum, which is the liquid medium used in the extraction process.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for garcinia's effectiveness isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for weight loss (obesity), cholesterol support (hyperlipidemia), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or athletic performance.
This doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the clinical trial evidence we have access to isn't solid enough yet to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Short-term, garcinia is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects in trial participants were diarrhea, stomach discomfort, headache, and nausea.
However, there are rare but serious concerns: cases of liver damage and liver failure have been reported, as well as a handful of reports linking garcinia to mania and one case of heart muscle inflammation. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Herbal Terra Garcinia, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on serotonergic drugs like antidepressants (risk of serotonin syndrome), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (increased bleeding risk), diabetes medications (risk of low blood sugar), or hepatotoxic drugs that can stress your liver.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Garcinia may be worth considering if you're looking into herbal weight management support, but it's not without risks — especially for your liver and if you're on psychiatric or blood-thinning medications. If you take an antidepressant, blood thinner, diabetes medication, or anything that affects your liver, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
The same goes for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Garcinia by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra Garcinia is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants and similar medications) — there's a documented case of a patient on escitalopram who developed serotonin syndrome after adding garcinia extract. The risk is moderate but real.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll want to check before combining this with blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, or any drug that can stress your liver. The active compound in garcinia, hydroxycitric acid, may increase bleeding risk, lower your blood sugar further, or add to liver strain.
Altogether, these interactions span 705 individual medications.
Before you start garcinia, run your medications through the checker below — especially if you take an antidepressant, a blood thinner, diabetes medication, or anything known to affect your liver.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
