Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: glucomannan, a soluble fiber derived from the konjac plant root. Glucomannan works as a bulk-forming laxative and viscous fiber that absorbs water in your digestive tract.

The inactive ingredients are a plant-derived capsule and magnesium stearate.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: promotes feelings of fullness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Obesity, Constipation, Diabetes, appetite suppression, satiety.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Glucomannan is rated "Possibly Effective" for Constipation (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Glucomannan is rated "Possibly Effective" for Diabetes.
  • Also on file: Glucomannan is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Obesity.

The evidence supports glucomannan as possibly effective for constipation, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia). For high blood pressure (hypertension), the data we hold isn't reliable enough to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Glucomannan is generally well tolerated when you drink plenty of water with it, but there's a real risk: it can cause choking or blockage of your esophagus or digestive tract if swallowed dry or without enough fluid. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and vomiting — especially at doses above 3 grams daily.

There isn't enough reliable safety data for pregnancy, and little is known about breastfeeding safety. Talk with your doctor before using this product if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Workers exposed to glucomannan powder in occupational settings have reported respiratory issues including sensitization and asthma, so avoid inhaling the powder.

Any oral medication you take regularly should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist before you start glucomannan. Because this supplement can reduce drug absorption across the board (Moderate severity), spacing your medications 2 hours away from it is important — but your healthcare provider may have other timing advice or recommend stopping it entirely depending on what you're taking.

Oral Drugs

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Glucomannan 1,995 mg by Nature's Way: Common Questions

Does Glucomannan 1,995 mg by Nature's Way interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Glucomannan 1,995 mg has a known interaction with 2,022 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Glucomannan 1,995 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
How much water do I need to drink with glucomannan?
The product facts say to take it with plenty of water. Exact amounts aren't specified, but the key is drinking enough that the glucomannan dissolves and moves through your digestive tract smoothly — skipping this step raises the risk of choking or blockage, which is serious.
Can I take glucomannan if I'm pregnant?
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know either way. Talk with your doctor before taking it during pregnancy so you can make a decision based on your individual situation.
Is it safe to breastfeed while taking glucomannan?
Little is known about its safety while breastfeeding, so caution is advised. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
What side effects should I expect?
The most common ones are bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting — especially if you take more than 3 grams daily. Serious but rare side effects include choking and blockage, which happen mainly when you don't drink enough water with it.
Does glucomannan actually help with diabetes and cholesterol?
The evidence says it's possibly effective for both — meaning some research supports it, but it's not proven yet. It's also possibly effective for constipation. For blood pressure, we don't have reliable data on whether it works.
