Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Glycine 600 contains one active ingredient: 600 mg of glycine, an amino acid your body naturally makes. The capsule itself is gelatin.

Glycine plays a role in protein synthesis and may have roles in nervous system function, which is why it's studied for various conditions.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Glycine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy glucose metabolism and glutathione synthesis.
  • We looked for evidence on: Metabolic syndrome, Obesity, Cognitive function, insulin sensitivity, antioxidant defense.
  • The closest evidence on file: Glycine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cognitive function (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Glycine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Obesity, Metabolic syndrome.

The evidence for glycine's effectiveness is limited and mixed. For schizophrenia, there's possibly effective evidence — meaning some research suggests it could help, though we'd need more study to be sure.

For other conditions this product is sometimes used for — including attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency, and cystic fibrosis — the evidence isn't established in our data.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but long-term safety data are limited. A small number of people have reported mild sedation, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, memory problems, headache, or sensory changes, though we can't be certain glycine caused them.

Rarely, some people experience soft stools, nausea, vomiting, or upper stomach discomfort — these symptoms go away quickly if you stop taking it. There isn't enough reliable safety data to know whether glycine is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if either applies to you.

Formula

Glycine 600 is a pure source of the simplest, yet uniquely important, amino acid glycine. Glycine's name results from its subtly sweet taste and the Greek word for sweet (glyks). Glycine has become a popular supplement because of its role in, among other things, supporting healthy blood sugar balance and glucose metabolism. Glycine is the principal amino acid present in collagen, which is the body's predominant protein, and therefore plays a critical structural role in healthy skin, bones, joints, blood vessels and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments and cartilage). Glycine is also one of the three amino acids required to create glutathione, our body's most important and powerful protective molecule. Glycine also acts as an important neurotransmitter, while also serving as a signaling molecule in the immune system. In short, despite glycine's small size and simple structure, it plays a multitude of critical roles in the most important systems in our body.

Theoretically, glycine might decrease the effectiveness of clozapine.
One small clinical study in patients with schizophrenia shows that adding glycine to clozapine therapy worsens symptoms of schizophrenia when compared with clozapine alone. The mechanism of this interaction is unclear.
