Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains a single active ingredient: glycine, an amino acid that plays a role in various body functions. It comes in a vegetarian capsule with hypoallergenic plant fiber and ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C) as inactive ingredients.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Glycine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Glycine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Schizophrenia — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Glycine is possibly effective for schizophrenia according to the data we hold. For other uses listed—including 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency, ADHD, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and cystic fibrosis—there isn't enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but long-term safety data are limited. Rare side effects include mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, upper stomach discomfort, and dry mouth—all of which resolve quickly if you stop taking it.

Other symptoms like irritability, insomnia, fatigue, memory trouble, headache, and sensory changes have been reported, though a clear link to glycine isn't established. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid it unless your doctor approves.

Glycine by Pure Encapsulations: Common Questions

Does Glycine by Pure Encapsulations interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Glycine has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Glycine contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does glycine really help schizophrenia?
The data shows glycine is possibly effective for schizophrenia. However, there's a complication: one study found that adding glycine to clozapine actually made symptoms worse, not better. If you take clozapine, this product isn't the right choice. Talk with your psychiatrist about what's safe for you.
What side effects might I notice?
Most people tolerate it well. Rarely, some people report mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset—all of which stop quickly if you quit taking it. Other symptoms like irritability, insomnia, or headaches have been reported, but we can't confirm glycine caused them.
Is it safe to take while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding—they can give you personalized advice.
How long can I safely take glycine?
Glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but long-term safety data are limited. If you're thinking of taking it long-term, check in with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's the right choice for you.
Can I use this for ADHD or benign prostate issues?
There isn't enough reliable evidence to know if glycine works for ADHD, benign prostate hyperplasia, or the other conditions listed. If you're considering it for one of these, your doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh the evidence and discuss other options.
