Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term when taken by mouth or applied to skin, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects are stomach irritation and nausea.

Topically, it can rarely cause eczema or allergic contact dermatitis (redness, itching, small bumps, burning). Liver toxicity is rare but has been reported in four cases; however, we can't be certain gotu kola itself was the cause, contaminants weren't involved, or what doses triggered the problem.

A 6-month trial at 120 mg daily showed no liver damage, but monitoring your liver is wise if you use it long-term. There isn't enough safety data to recommend this product during pregnancy, so it's best avoided.

Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it should also be avoided.
