Here's the gist: the hydrocodone part of your Vicodin or Norco is an opioid that already slows down your brain and body. Gotu kola may add to that calming effect. Lab research hints that gotu kola can gently nudge the same GABA pathways that make you feel relaxed or drowsy, so pairing the two could leave you more sleepy, foggy, lightheaded, or unsteady than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's mostly theoretical, based on how things work in a test tube, not on real patient reports. So it may never cause a problem for you. Still, since both can make you tired, I'd keep an eye out for extra drowsiness and run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're driving or older.

There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the concern with combining gotu kola and your Vicodin or Norco: the acetaminophen part of this medication is processed by the liver, and in higher doses or with daily use it can stress the liver. There are a few scattered case reports where gotu kola itself was linked to liver irritation, so the worry is that the two together could add up and put extra strain on your liver.

I want to be honest that this evidence is pretty thin (just a handful of anecdotal reports), so it's a theoretical caution rather than a proven problem. Still, since acetaminophen is already hard on the liver, I'd play it safe. Watch for things like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these.
