Here's the simple version: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) already makes most people drowsy, and gotu kola may have its own calming effect by acting on GABA, one of the brain's relaxation signals. Stacked together, they could add up and leave you feeling more sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or slow to react than you'd expect from the Benadryl alone.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is though. This is a theoretical interaction based mostly on lab work, not on real patient reports, so it's about being a little cautious rather than alarmed. Still, if you take both and notice extra grogginess, avoid driving until you know how it hits you, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
