There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the thing to know about itraconazole: it's already one of those antifungals that can be tough on the liver. That's why doctors sometimes check liver enzymes when you're on it for a while. Gotu kola is the concern here because there are a handful of case reports where people developed liver irritation after taking it, though honestly the evidence is thin and we can't say for sure gotu kola was the cause.

The worry is simply additive stress on the liver if you take both together. Watch for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, nausea, or pain in the upper right belly. This is theoretical, not proven, so don't panic, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Itraconazole

What Is Itraconazole Used For?

Brand names: Sporanox, Sporanox Injection, Tolsura

Itraconazole capsules (including Sporanox capsules and generic itraconazole capsules) treat serious fungal infections — blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and aspergillosis — in both people with normal immune systems and those who are immunocompromised. Capsule forms are also approved for nail fungus (onychomycosis) caused by dermatophytes in non-immunocompromised patients. Tolsura (a gelatin-coated capsule formulation) treats blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and aspergillosis in adults, but is not approved for nail fungus and is not interchangeable with other itraconazole products.

Itraconazole oral solution is specifically approved for oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush — a fungal infection of the mouth) and esophageal candidiasis (a fungal infection of the food pipe). Only the oral solution has been shown to work for these mouth and throat infections; capsules cannot be substituted for this use.
