Here's the basic idea with oxymorphone (Opana) and gotu kola. Oxymorphone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already calms down the nervous system, causing drowsiness, slowed breathing, dizziness, and a foggy head. Lab research hints that gotu kola may have its own calming effect by acting on GABA receptors in the brain. So in theory, putting the two together could pile on extra sedation.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not real patient studies. It's not a strong, proven interaction. Still, since oxymorphone is so potent, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and watching for unusual sleepiness if you do.

What Is Oxymorphone Used For?

Brand names: Numorphan, Opana, Opana ER, Opana Injection

Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Tablets (immediate-release) are used to treat acute pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain treatments are not enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are used to manage severe, persistent pain that needs to be treated with a daily opioid over an extended period and when other options are inadequate.

Both forms are reserved for situations where non-opioid medicines or other approaches have not worked well enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are not meant to be taken on an as-needed basis — they are for ongoing, around-the-clock pain management only.
