HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Grape Seed Extract 200 mg by Vitacost
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: grape seed extract 200 mg per capsule. Grape seed extract is a concentrated form of compounds from grape seeds, primarily proanthocyanidins, which are plant polyphenols with antioxidant properties.
The inactive ingredients are rice flour, gelatin capsule, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for grape seed extract centers on chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — a condition where blood pools in the legs because veins aren't working well — where it's rated possibly effective. For other uses in the data we hold — chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, hay fever, and obesity — the evidence is rated possibly ineffective, meaning there's not a solid case that it works for those purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Grape seed extract is generally well tolerated in studies. The most common side effects reported are mild: abdominal pain, diarrhea, dry mouth, indigestion, headache, joint pain, and nausea.
Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) to grape skin has been reported. During pregnancy, concentrated grape supplements should be avoided due to limited safety data, though grapes as food are fine.
There isn't enough information on concentrated supplements while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (which lower bleeding risk). Also review it if you take medications processed by liver enzymes, especially cyclosporine, midazolam, or drugs broken down by CYP1A2, CYP2D6, CYP2E1, or CYP3A4 systems — the data shows potential interactions, though some have only been observed in the lab or animals, not yet in humans.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood thinners, medications processed by your liver, or cyclosporine, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. It's generally well tolerated, and may help with chronic venous insufficiency, but the interactions we've documented make a quick review essential.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss this supplement with your healthcare provider first.

Grape Seed Extract 200 mg by Vitacost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vitacost Grape Seed Extract 200 mg interacts with several medication types through its single active ingredient, grape seed extract.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (drugs that prevent clots) — grape seed extract may thin blood further and raise your bleeding risk. The data shows in vitro evidence of this effect, though it hasn't been confirmed in human studies yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Grape seed extract may also affect how your body processes certain medications by interfering with liver enzymes. It theoretically increases levels of some drugs metabolized by the CYP2D6 and CYP2E1 enzyme systems (though human evidence is lacking), and the picture with CYP3A4 is unclear — research suggests it could either increase or decrease drug levels.
Additionally, there's a documented case where grape juice reduced absorption of cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant) by up to 30%; if you take cyclosporine, separate it from grape seed extract by at least 2 hours. Long-term use may also reduce the effects of midazolam (a sedative), though single doses appear safe.
Finally, grape seed extract may decrease levels of drugs broken down by the CYP1A2 enzyme — a small study showed grape juice lowered phenacetin levels, though this older pain reliever is rarely prescribed today. Altogether, these interactions span 911 individual medications.
If you take any prescription medication, run it through the checker below before starting this supplement.

For each ingredient in Grape Seed Extract 200 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Grape seed extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, grape extracts may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro evidence suggests that grape extracts might decrease platelet aggregation.
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Ingesting grape juice with cyclosporine can reduce cyclosporine absorption.
A small pharmacokinetic study in healthy young adults shows that intake of purple grape juice 200 mL along with cyclosporine can decrease the absorption of cyclosporine by up to 30% when compared with water. Separate doses of grape juice and cyclosporine by at least 2 hours to avoid this interaction.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, grape juice might reduce the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
A small pharmacokinetic study in healthy adults shows that ingestion of 200 mL of grape juice decreases phenacetin plasma levels. This is thought to be due to induction of CYP1A2.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, grape seed extract may increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that grape seed extract might inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, grape seed extract might increase the levels of CYP2E1 substrates.
In vitro and animal research suggests that grape seed proanthocyanidin extract inhibits CYP2E1 enzymes. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
It is unclear if grape seed extract inhibits or induces CYP3A4; research is conflicting.
In vitro evidence suggests that grape seed extract might inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, evidence from animal research shows that grape seed extract may induce CYP3A4 in the liver. So far, these interactions have not been reported in humans.
Midazolam (Versed)
Theoretically, long-term intake of grape seed extract might decrease the effects of midazolam.
Animal research shows that subchronic ingestions of grape seed extract can increase the elimination of intravenous midazolam by increasing hepatic CYP3A4 activity. Single doses of grape seed extract do not appear to affect midazolam elimination.
Phenacetin
Grape juice might decrease phenacetin absorption.
A small pharmacokinetic study in healthy adults shows that ingestion of 200 mL of grape juice decreases phenacetin plasma levels. This is thought to be due to induction of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2).
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
It is unclear if grape juice or grape seed extract inhibits CYP2C9; research is conflicting.
In vitro evidence shows that grape seed extract or grape juice might inhibit CYP2C9 enzymes. However, a small pharmacokinetic study in healthy adults shows that drinking 8 ounces of grape juice once does not affect the clearance of flurbiprofen, a probe-drug for CYP2C9 metabolism. The effects of continued grape juice consumption are unclear.
