Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains 2 active ingredients: beef liver extract and beef lung. Liver extract is a concentrated source of nutrients naturally found in beef liver, including iron and vitamin A.

The lung provides concentrated compounds from that tissue. The capsules also contain gelatin as an inactive ingredient.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Liver Extract product and its label doesn't state a use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We hold effectiveness data for the liver extract ingredient only. For chronic fatigue syndrome, the evidence is rated as possibly ineffective — meaning the studies we have don't support its use for this condition.

For hepatitis C, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know one way or the other. We have no effectiveness ratings on file for the lung ingredient.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

No adverse reactions have been formally reported, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done. Here's what matters: liver extract delivers very high levels of vitamin A and iron.

That's generally low risk if you're taking normal amounts, but it can add up quickly if you're also getting these nutrients from other sources. There's also a quality concern — liver extract comes from raw animal liver sourced from slaughterhouses, potentially from sick animals.

Some countries where BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a serious prion disease in cattle) has occurred include Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, Oman, and Belgium. No human cases of BSE from contaminated liver extract have been reported, but the risk hasn't been fully ruled out.

During pregnancy, liver extract's very high vitamin A content may harm a developing baby, so avoid it unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. Safety data for breastfeeding isn't on file.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your exact medications before starting, especially warfarin (which could lose effectiveness) and iron supplements or medications (which could increase iron levels). If you're on either, ask your pharmacist whether this product is right for you.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This is a whole-animal nutrient product, not a drug — it works best for someone interested in traditional nose-to-tail nutrition who doesn't take warfarin or iron supplements. If you take either of those, check with us first.

Anyone with iron-overload risk, liver disease, or plans to become pregnant should talk to their pharmacist or doctor before starting.

General Statements

For most of human history, we consumes the whole animal (nose-to-tail) with deep respect and profound purpose. For instance, Native Americans and early ancestral healers believes that eating the organs from a healthy animal would strengthen and support the health of the corresponding organ of the individual - also known as "like supports like." The traditional way of treating a person with a weak heart was to feed the person the heart of animal. Since we've abandoned these ways, the modern world has left us malnourished with an epidemic of declining health. The solution is to find ways to recreate our ancestral environment (sleep, nourishment, movement, sunshine, etc). It's time we honor our ancestors by putting back in, what the modern world has left out (to return our people back to strength, health and happiness). We walk our talk and we offer a one-of-a-kind "guided" experience. Learn more at www.ancestralsupplements.com Brian Johnson "Liver King"

Liver2 drug types · 3 drugs

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Grassfed Beef Lung by Ancestral Supplements: Common Questions

Does Grassfed Beef Lung by Ancestral Supplements interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Grassfed Beef Lung has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Grassfed Beef Lung contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is it safe to take this during pregnancy?
No — liver extract contains very high levels of vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby. The safety notes advise avoiding it during pregnancy unless your doctor specifically recommends otherwise. Talk to your pharmacist or OB before using.
Can I take this if I'm on warfarin?
You'll need to check with your pharmacist first. Liver extract may contain small amounts of vitamin K, which theoretically could reduce how well warfarin works, but this hasn't been directly studied in humans. Don't start without asking — your pharmacist can help you decide.
What does the liver in this product do?
Liver extract is a concentrated source of nutrients found in beef liver, including iron and vitamin A. It's used in traditional whole-animal nutrition products.
Are there any reported side effects?
No adverse reactions have been formally reported. However, a thorough safety study hasn't been completed. The main concerns are the high vitamin A and iron content, and potential contamination risks from source animals, not acute side effects.
Does this help with chronic fatigue?
The evidence we hold rates liver extract as possibly ineffective for chronic fatigue syndrome, meaning the studies don't support using it for that condition.
What's the lung ingredient in here for?
We hold no interaction or effectiveness data for the lung ingredient, so I can't tell you what role it plays or whether it's been studied. It's part of the whole-animal nutrient approach, but the specifics aren't in our data.
