Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains 2 active ingredients: liver extract and placenta. Liver extract is derived from animal liver tissue and contains naturally occurring nutrients including heme iron (the form of iron your body absorbs most easily) and vitamin K.

The placenta ingredient is included as a traditional supplement, though we have no interaction data on file for it. The capsule itself is made of gelatin, an inactive ingredient.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Liver Extract product and its label doesn't state a use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for liver extract in chronic fatigue syndrome (feeling exhausted and worn down over time) is rated possibly ineffective — meaning the data we have doesn't support its use for that purpose. For hepatitis C (a liver infection), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.

We hold no effectiveness data for placenta.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Liver extract is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but this product can deliver high levels of vitamin A and iron, which is worth knowing about. Liver is sourced from slaughterhouses, and there's a theoretical concern about contamination from sick animals or, in some countries, BSE (a rare but serious brain disease in cattle) — though no human cases from contaminated liver extract have ever been reported.

Because of the high vitamin A content, the safety data advises against use in pregnancy unless your doctor specifically recommends it. We don't have detailed safety information for the placenta ingredient, so check with your doctor before using if you're pregnant, nursing, or have any health concerns.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take warfarin (a blood thinner), check your exact medication in the interaction tool — vitamin K in liver extract may affect how well it works. If you're on iron supplements or iron medications, do the same, as combining them with this product could raise your iron intake.

No other interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This product may appeal to folks looking for whole-food nutrient support, but if you take warfarin or iron supplements, you'll want to run your exact medications through the checker on this page first. Pregnant or nursing?

General Statements

For most of human history, we consumed the whole animal (nose-to-tail) with deep respect and profound purpose. For instance, Native Americans and early ancestral healers believed that eating the organs from a healthy animal would strengthen and support the health of the corresponding organ of the individual - also known as "like supports like." The traditional way of treating a person with a weak heart was to feed the person the heart of a healthy animal. Since we've abandoned these ways, the modern world has left us malnourished with an epidemic of declining health. The solution is to find ways to recreate our ancestral environment (sleep, nourishment, movement, sunshine, etc). It’s time we honor our ancestors by putting back in, what the modern world has left out (to return our people back to strength, health and happiness). We walk our talk and we offer a one-of-a-kind "guided" experience. Learn more at www.ancestralsupplements.com Brain Johnson "Liver King"

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Grassfed Placenta by Ancestral Supplements: Common Questions

Does Grassfed Placenta by Ancestral Supplements interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Grassfed Placenta has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Grassfed Placenta contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this interact with my blood thinner?
Liver extract contains small amounts of vitamin K, which theoretically could reduce warfarin's effect if you start or stop the product or change how much you take. This hasn't been studied directly in people, so the actual risk is unclear. Use the medication checker on this page with your exact drug name and dose, and talk to your pharmacist.
Can I take this if I'm also taking iron supplements?
Liver extract naturally contains heme iron. Taking it alongside iron supplements or medications could push your total iron intake higher, which might cause stomach upset or iron buildup — especially if you take high doses, use it long-term, or have a condition like hemochromatosis. Check with your pharmacist about your specific situation.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
The safety data advises against use in pregnancy because liver extract can contain very high amounts of vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby. Talk to your doctor before using if you're pregnant or planning to be.
Has anyone reported side effects from this?
No adverse reactions have been formally reported, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done either. There is a theoretical concern about contamination from raw animal liver sourced at slaughterhouses, and a small risk of BSE if the source cattle came from affected countries — though no human cases have ever been linked to liver extract products.
What exactly does the liver ingredient do?
Liver extract is a concentrated whole-food source of nutrients naturally found in animal liver, including heme iron and vitamin K. We hold no specific effectiveness data on file for this product's intended use.
What do we know about the placenta ingredient?
The placenta is included as a traditional supplement ingredient, but we don't hold interaction or safety data for it. Check with your doctor if you have questions about it.
