Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but digestive upset is common—belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting do happen. Skin reactions (rash, itching, swelling) are also reported, and the risk goes up with higher doses.

Rare serious side effects like muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) have been reported. Because guggul may stimulate the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy.

There isn't enough safety data to recommend it while breastfeeding either.
