Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but digestive upset can happen — belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, headache, vomiting, and an unpleasant taste are the most common side effects. Skin reactions (rash, itching, swelling) also occur and appear to be dose-dependent; they're more common at higher doses.

In rare cases, a serious muscle breakdown condition (rhabdomyolysis) has been reported. Some people may have an allergic reaction within minutes of taking it.

Guggul is not recommended during pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus and its safety isn't established. There isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding.
