Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but digestive upset is common — belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and an unpleasant taste have all been reported. Skin reactions (rash, itching, swelling) are also possible and appear to be dose-dependent; the risk was higher at 2,000 mg three times daily than at 1,000 mg three times daily.

A small number of people have had hypersensitivity reactions within minutes of taking it. Rarely, a serious muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis has been reported.

Guggul should not be used during pregnancy — animal and traditional use data suggest it may stimulate the uterus and its safety is not established. There isn't enough safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding either.
