Guggulhills contains one active ingredient: guggul extract, a resin from the Commiphora tree used in traditional herbal medicine. The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients—xanthan gum, maize starch, silica, HPMC (a capsule material), and magnesium stearate (a binding agent).

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common are digestive complaints—belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting—plus headache and an unpleasant taste.
Skin reactions (itching, rash, swelling, or allergic dermatitis) are also reported and appear to be dose-dependent; higher doses carry higher risk. A rare serious side effect is rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown).
If you're pregnant, guggul is not advised because it may stimulate the uterus and safety is not established. If you're breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so it's best avoided.

It can interfere with how your body processes a large category of medications called CYP3A4 substrates—which includes many statins, some blood pressure drugs, and immunosuppressants—potentially lowering their effectiveness. Because guggul has estrogen-like activity, it may increase the risk of side effects when taken with birth control pills, estrogen therapy, or tamoxifen (a cancer medication).

Guggul extract

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, guggul might reduce the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that guggul constituents known as guggulsterones can induce CYP3A4.
Diltiazem (Cardizem, Others)
Guggul might reduce the effects of diltiazem.
A small pharmacokinetic study shows that concomitant use of guggul with diltiazem reduces the bioavailability of diltiazem.
Estrogens
Theoretically, guggul might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with estrogens.

Guggul might reduce the effects of propranolol.

Theoretically, guggul might interfere with tamoxifen therapy.

Thyroid Hormone
