Intestamine contains 4 active ingredients. Glutamine is an amino acid that your body uses for energy and immune support, particularly after stress or illness.
N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG) is a modified form of glucosamine, a compound found naturally in cartilage and connective tissue. Acacia fiber (also called gum arabic) is a soluble fiber from the acacia tree.
NutraFlora is also included, though we hold no interaction data for it. The product contains no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
For glutamine, the evidence supports it as effective for sickle cell disease, and possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma. For N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, it is likely effective for osteoarthritis, but the evidence is insufficient to rate its use for aging skin, back pain, colorectal cancer, or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
For acacia fiber, evidence is insufficient to rate its use for metabolic syndrome, kidney failure, sickle cell disease, obesity, gingivitis, or peristomal lesions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Common side effects from oral use include belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, headache, and gastrointestinal pain.
High doses (10–30 grams daily) used in trials may increase the risk of these digestive symptoms. People with kidney or liver disease should use glutamine only under medical supervision.
N-acetyl-D-glucosamine is generally well tolerated, with common side effects including bloating, constipation, cramps, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea. Rare severe reactions and allergic responses (including anaphylaxis in very rare cases) have been reported, as have cases of asthma exacerbation.
Acacia fiber is generally well tolerated but may cause abdominal bloating, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, cramping, and mild diarrhea — these often subside within 2 weeks of continued use. Glutamine is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
N-acetyl-D-glucosamine should be avoided in pregnancy and during breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. For acacia fiber, amounts found in foods are likely safe, but supplement doses have not been well studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.

The most serious is N-acetyl-D-glucosamine with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner: glucosamine may increase warfarin's anticoagulant effects and raise your risk of bruising and bleeding.

Glutamine interacts with anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs) at Moderate severity. Theoretically, glutamine converts to an excitatory brain chemical that might work against these drugs, though this hasn't been reported in humans yet.
N-acetyl-D-glucosamine also carries Moderate-severity interactions with topoisomerase II inhibitors (certain cancer drugs like etoposide and doxorubicin) and with oral medications generally due to acacia fiber's effects on drug absorption — it may reduce how much your body takes in. Minor interactions exist between N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and diabetes drugs, and between it and acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Acacia Fiber
Amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox)
Gum arabic can reduce the absorption of amoxicillin.
A small study in healthy volunteers shows that taking amoxicillin and gum arabic concurrently significantly reduces the absorption of amoxicillin. Separate doses of amoxicillin from gum arabic by at least 2 hours.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, gum arabic can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber content.
Gum arabic has been used as a suspending osmotic agent in drug formulations. It might improve bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs like naproxen, but reduce absorption of polar drugs like amoxicillin. To avoid changes in absorption, take gum arabic 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in international normalized ratio (INR) in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. In one case, the increase in INR occurred only after tripling the dose of a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement from 500 mg/400 mg daily to 1500/1200 mg daily. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone to increased INR in patients taking warfarin. The mechanism of this interaction is unclear. Glucosamine is a small component of heparin, but is not thought to have anticoagulant activity; however, animal research suggests that it might have antiplatelet activity.
Topoisomerase Ii Inhibitors
Theoretically glucosamine may induce resistance to topoisomerase II inhibitors.
In vitro research suggests that glucosamine might induce resistance to etoposide (VP16, VePesid) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin) by reducing inhibition of topoisomerase II, an enzyme required for DNA replication in tumor cells. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Others)
Acetaminophen might interfere with the activity of glucosamine sulfate by interacting with the sulfate portion.
Anecdotal reports suggest that adding glucosamine to an acetaminophen regimen might decrease pain control in patients with osteoarthritis. Some research suggests that the sulfate portion of glucosamine sulfate might contribute to its effect in osteoarthritis. Since acetaminophen metabolism requires sulfur and reduces serum sulfate concentrations, acetaminophen could theoretically interfere with the action of glucosamine sulfate. Conversely, the administration of sulfate could theoretically decrease the effectiveness of acetaminophen in sulfate-deficient people by increasing its clearance.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Despite initial concerns, it is unlikely that glucosamine will interfere with the effects of antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research has suggested that glucosamine might increase insulin resistance or decrease insulin production. This has raised concerns that taking glucosamine might worsen diabetes and decrease the effectiveness of diabetes drugs. However, clinical research suggests that glucosamine does not have adverse effects on blood glucose or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) in healthy, obese, or type 2 diabetes patients.
Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
