Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-glycine, a naturally occurring amino acid. There are no inactive ingredients listed — it's just the amino acid in powder form.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Glycine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Glycine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Schizophrenia — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

L-glycine is possibly effective for schizophrenia, though the research is mixed — in particular, the interaction data shows that adding it to clozapine therapy actually worsened symptoms in a small study. For other uses listed here — 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase deficiency, ADHD, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and cystic fibrosis — we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though long-term safety data are limited. Rare side effects include mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, and upper GI tract discomfort — these resolve quickly if you stop taking it.

Other effects like irritability, insomnia, fatigue, memory impairment, headache, dry mouth, and sensory changes have been reported, but we can't be sure they're caused by the glycine. We don't have enough reliable safety data for use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're considering it during either time.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-glycine may be worth considering if your doctor recommends it for schizophrenia, but the research is complicated by that interaction with clozapine. If you take clozapine or any other antipsychotic, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — they know your full medication picture and can tell you whether it's the right call for you.

L-Glycine by Hard Rhino: Common Questions

Does L-Glycine by Hard Rhino interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Glycine has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Glycine contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is L-glycine safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
We don't have enough reliable safety data to say either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to decide what's best for your situation — they can weigh the risks and benefits for you personally.
What side effects might I experience?
Mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, and upper GI discomfort have occurred rarely and resolve quickly when you stop. Other effects like irritability, insomnia, fatigue, and headache have been reported, but we can't confirm glycine caused them.
Does L-glycine actually work for schizophrenia?
The evidence says it's possibly effective for schizophrenia, but there's a catch: when added to clozapine therapy, glycine actually worsened symptoms in a small clinical trial. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise whether it might fit your treatment plan.
What is L-glycine, and what does it do in the body?
L-glycine is an amino acid your body uses naturally. It's been studied for schizophrenia and a few other conditions, though for most of those we don't yet have enough evidence to know if it truly works.
