Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid (a building block of protein) at 500 mg per tablet. The remaining ingredients are inactive — microcrystalline cellulose, maltodextrin, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, silica, croscarmellose sodium, and an aqueous film coating — which help form and hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
L-lysine is possibly effective for herpes labialis, commonly known as cold sores. The evidence supporting this use comes from clinical research, though the data isn't conclusive.
For other uses in this product's ingredient profile — child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers — there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. At higher amounts, you may experience stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or dyspepsia (indigestion).
Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been well studied. Lysine from food is fine, but supplement use in pregnancy hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor first.
There's also not enough reliable information on supplement use while breastfeeding, so caution is advised and discussion with your doctor or pharmacist is important.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication for certain gastrointestinal conditions), confirm with your doctor or pharmacist that L-lysine won't interfere with its effect before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-lysine may help with cold sores if the research applies to you, though the evidence isn't airtight. It's generally well tolerated, but high doses can upset your stomach.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take a 5-HT4 agonist medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
