L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis). The evidence for pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and supporting child growth is insufficient — we don't have reliable data to say whether it works for those uses yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects from oral use are stomach upset, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion.
High doses may cause more stomach upset, and long-term safety at high levels hasn't been well studied. There's one rare case report of kidney problems linked to lysine use, but it's just a single report.
