What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-lysine hydrochloride, an amino acid your body uses to build and repair tissue. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients—hypromellose, stearic acid, microcrystalline cellulose, and rice flour—which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Not established
L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis), based on the evidence we hold. For other uses listed—child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers—there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. High amounts may cause stomach upset, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion; long-term safety at high doses hasn't been well studied.
One rare case report linked oral lysine to a serious kidney condition, though this is not a common finding. Supplement safety in pregnancy and while breastfeeding hasn't been well studied, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this if you're pregnant or nursing.
Lysine from food is fine, but supplement form is different.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication that works on serotonin receptors in the gut), let your pharmacist know before you start L-lysine—it may reduce how well the drug works.

Formula
Lysine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained through the diet or through supplementation. Lysine is necessary for the production of all proteins in the body, and is required for the maintenance of the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which form all connective tissue such as skin, tendon, and bone. Lysine is also a precursor to carnitine, which is needed for fat metabolism and energy production. In addition, Lysine may help to support a healthy immune system and proper cardiovascular function.

L-Lysine 500 mg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Lysine 500 mg by NOW has one documented interaction.
The ingredient L-lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists (medications that work on a specific serotonin receptor in the gut). Animal research suggests lysine blocks this receptor and can inhibit the diarrhea-inducing effects of 5-HT4 agonists, so if you're taking one of these drugs, lysine might blunt how well it works.
This is rated a Minor interaction.
