Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-lysine 500 mg per capsule. L-Lysine is an amino acid — one of the building blocks your body uses to make protein.
The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients (sorbitol, stearic acid, modified cellulose gum, and magnesium stearate) that help form and preserve the supplement.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis). The evidence we hold is not strong enough to rate it for promoting child growth, healing pressure ulcers, or healing diabetic foot ulcers, so we can't say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. At higher amounts, it may cause stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion — the most commonly reported side effects from oral use.
Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been well studied. There is one case report of a person developing kidney inflammation linked to oral L-lysine use, but this is very rare.
For pregnancy, the data on supplement L-lysine safety is not well studied, so you'll want to check with your doctor first — lysine from food is fine, but the supplement is a different story. There isn't enough reliable information on L-lysine supplement use while breastfeeding either, so caution is advised and talking with your doctor or pharmacist is wise.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — L-lysine may reduce its effectiveness. No interactions are documented for other medication types in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Lysine is an option if you're looking to address cold sores, where it's shown some promise. If you take a 5-HT4 agonist, clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first.
It's generally well tolerated, but high doses may cause digestive upset, and if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider before starting.
