What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid at 1,000 mg per tablet. The remaining ingredients are inactive excipients — binders, fillers, and capsule materials (microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and polyethylene glycol).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for L-lysine to prevent or shorten cold sores is rated possibly effective — meaning some research supports it, but more data would strengthen the case. For other uses like promoting child growth, healing pressure ulcers, or helping diabetic foot ulcers, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate how well it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine from food is safe, but supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant or nursing. At typical doses, it's generally well tolerated.
High amounts may cause stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion. Long-term safety at high doses isn't well established.
There's one rare case report of kidney problems linked to oral lysine use, though this is very uncommon.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before you start, check if you take a 5-HT4 agonist — L-lysine may reduce how well it works (Minor severity). Run your exact medication through the checker on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
