L-Theanine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Theanine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Theanine, an amino acid naturally found in green tea. There are no inactive ingredients (fillers or binders) in this powder form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function—that's the strength of evidence we hold. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence isn't established enough for us to rate it either way.
If you're considering L-Theanine for one of those other uses, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research suggests.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but how safe it is long-term isn't well studied. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, or more vivid dreams after taking it.
There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding—the data advises against use during both, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your exact medications before starting, especially blood pressure drugs (antihypertensive medications) and anything that slows your central nervous system, like sedatives or sleep aids. No interactions are documented for serotonergic drugs, though research on L-Theanine's serotonin effect is mixed.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine may help with focus and mental clarity, and it's generally well tolerated in the short run. If you take blood pressure medication or sedatives, check with your pharmacist first.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it's right for you.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine by BulkSupplements.com does interact with certain medications, most notably blood pressure drugs.
L-Theanine may lower blood pressure on its own, and when combined with antihypertensive drugs, this effect could be stronger than expected. Animal studies suggest theanine can reduce blood pressure, so if you're on a blood pressure medication, your levels might drop further.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Theanine also has documented minor interactions with central nervous system (CNS) depressants—drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives or sleep aids. In theory, theanine might add to their sedative effects, though it's unclear if this is a real concern in everyday use.
Additionally, research on L-Theanine's effect on serotonin is mixed: some studies show it may increase serotonin levels, others suggest it may decrease them. However, no cases of serotonin syndrome or serotonin-related side effects have been reported with L-Theanine use.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. The best move is to check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start, especially if you take anything for blood pressure or sleep.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
