Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make several important compounds, including dopamine (a brain messenger) and thyroid hormones. The capsule also holds gelatin, rice flour, and silica as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition where the body can't process the amino acid phenylalanine. It's possibly effective for sharpening cognition and memory.
For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it's likely ineffective. The data we hold on it for alcohol use disorder and dementia isn't strong enough to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but we recommend talking with your doctor before using it regularly. The most common side effects are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea—and these can occur even at the dose in this product.
At much higher doses (150 mg per kilogram of body weight), headache and fatigue are more likely. There isn't enough safety data on tyrosine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start L-tyrosine, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take levodopa (Moderate interaction risk—tyrosine can reduce its effectiveness) or thyroid hormone medications (Moderate interaction risk—tyrosine may amplify their effect).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-tyrosine may help with cognitive sharpness and memory, and it's definitely useful if you have PKU. But if you take levodopa or thyroid medication, you'll want to clear this with your doctor or pharmacist first—spacing matters with levodopa, and thyroid meds need monitoring.
