Calea zacatechichi has a long history in folk medicine, but modern safety data is sparse. The main side effects observed in people are nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness.

Some people also report it tastes very bitter. One study in healthy volunteers showed it caused somnolence (sleepiness) and changes in sleep quality, including less deep sleep.
