Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Lemon product and its label doesn't state a use — see Lemon's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that lemon bioflavonoid works for any of the conditions it's marketed for — hay fever, anxiety, respiratory infections, high blood pressure, or kidney stones. For all of these, the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness.

If you're considering it for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to see whether the science supports it for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon as a food or drink in normal amounts is well tolerated by most people. However, concentrated supplements like this one and lemon essential oils haven't been well studied in larger medicinal doses, so your doctor should approve before you use them.

In clinical trials, people taking fresh lemon juice experienced more gastrointestinal upset than those on placebo — specifically, about 21% had heartburn and 8% had upper abdominal pain, compared to 1% and 3% in the placebo group. Data on safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't on file for lemon, so speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing before taking this product.

Itraconazole (Sporanox)

Theoretically, taking itraconazole capsules or tablets with a beverage containing lemon might increase the levels and clinical effects of itraconazole.
In one case report, dissolving itraconazole tablets in a small amount of specific beverages containing lemon prior to administration increased the level of itraconazole in a lung transplant patient. In this case, the increased bioavailability was desirable and was likely due to improved tablet dissolution in the acidic beverage.

Lemon Bioflavonoid 450 mg 10% Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Lemon Bioflavonoid 450 mg 10% Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Lemon Bioflavonoid 450 mg 10% Extract has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Lemon Bioflavonoid 450 mg 10% Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What are bioflavonoids and why are they in lemon?
Bioflavonoids are antioxidant compounds naturally present in citrus fruits like lemons. This supplement extracts them to concentrate the amount in each capsule, though the evidence that isolated bioflavonoids deliver health benefits is not yet established in our data.
Could lemon bioflavonoid help with my hay fever or high blood pressure?
The evidence we hold shows insufficient reliable data to rate whether lemon bioflavonoid works for hay fever, high blood pressure, respiratory infections, anxiety, or kidney stones. Talk with your doctor about what the current science supports for your specific situation.
Will this upset my stomach?
In one trial, people taking fresh lemon juice (60 mL twice daily) reported more heartburn and upper abdominal pain than those on placebo — about 21% and 8%, respectively. This supplement is a concentrate, so gastrointestinal upset is possible, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
Is it safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for lemon bioflavonoid supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing — they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
What's actually in this capsule besides the bioflavonoid extract?
The capsule itself is made of gelatin and water — these are inactive ingredients (binding and filling materials) and not the active part of the product.
