What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lutein, a yellow pigment naturally found in leafy greens and some other foods that concentrates in your eye's macula (the center part of your retina). The powder also includes maltodextrin as an inactive ingredient to give it structure.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for slowing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts — the two eye conditions where the evidence is strongest. For retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the evidence doesn't support that it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. Studies show doses up to 20 mg daily have not caused adverse effects.
The safety note is about supplement doses specifically — lutein occurs naturally in breast milk, but we don't have good data on what happens with higher supplement amounts during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so talk to your doctor if you're pregnant or nursing before taking this.
