Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lycopene, a red pigment found naturally in tomatoes and other fruits. It's a carotenoid — a plant compound your body can convert to vitamin A.
The powder also includes several inactive ingredients (corn starch, sucrose, gum arabic, ascorbic acid palmitate, and tocopherol) that help keep the lycopene stable and make it easier to mix and measure.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for lycopene is mixed and depends on what you're taking it for. It's possibly effective for prostate cancer, but the data isn't strong enough to be certain.
For bladder cancer and diabetes, research suggests it's probably ineffective. For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), exercise-induced asthma, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. That said, supplements aren't as well studied as whole foods, so caution is warranted in pregnancy and while breastfeeding — the safety data just isn't there.
Some people taking lycopene supplements report stomach upset, including diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or indigestion.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications — blood thinners like warfarin or apixaban, or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel — you should check with your pharmacist before adding this supplement. It may increase bleeding risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lycopene powder makes sense if you're interested in prostate health and want to supplement what you get from tomato-based foods. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, you need to check with your pharmacist first.
The same goes for pregnancy and breastfeeding — talk to your doctor before starting. Your pharmacist can also help you decide if this fits your health goals.
