What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Magnolia against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic Magnolia extract, made from magnolia bark. The extract includes active compounds called honokiol and magnolol, which are responsible for magnolia's effects in the body.
It's formulated as a liquid, suspended in vegetable palm glycerin, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, and purified Hawaiian water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Magnolia extract is possibly effective for gingivitis (gum inflammation). For allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and dental plaque, the evidence isn't reliable enough yet to rate how well it works.
For anxiety, there isn't enough data we hold to establish how well it works — the research so far hasn't been conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, magnolia is generally well tolerated. Human safety data is limited, especially for long-term use, so if you're thinking of taking it regularly, that's something to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.
Magnolia is not safe in pregnancy — avoid it if you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant. There isn't reliable safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it while nursing.
In clinical trials, a small number of participants reported side effects like fatigue, headache, and hand shaking, though it's unclear whether these were caused by magnolia or another ingredient in the combination product tested.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check it with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — magnolia may increase bleeding risk. Also flag it if you're on any CNS depressants, sedatives, or sleep aids, since the extract itself can make you drowsy and might add to their effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Magnolia extract may be worth considering if you're looking at something for gum health, but the evidence for other uses isn't there yet. Because it can thin your blood and make you drowsy, you'll need to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or sedating medications.
Avoid it entirely if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk with your pharmacist about whether it fits your situation before you start.

Magnolia by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Magnolia extract interacts with two major drug categories through its magnolol and honokiol content.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants/antiplatelets) — magnolia may add to their effects and raise your bleeding risk, since its active compounds inhibit platelet clumping in lab studies.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to be careful combining magnolia with CNS depressants — medications that slow your brain activity, like sedatives, sleeping pills, or some anxiety drugs. The extract itself has sedative properties, and large doses used together might have additive effects that could make you too drowsy or impair your thinking.
Altogether, these interactions span 351 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions — especially any blood thinners or medications that affect alertness — with the search tool on this page before you start.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
