Magnolia and Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine

Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill already has two ingredients that calm the brain: butalbital (a barbiturate) and codeine (an opioid). Both can make you drowsy, slow your breathing, and cloud your thinking. Magnolia bark contains honokiol and magnolol, which in lab and animal studies act on the same GABA pathways and seem to have a sedative, calming effect of their own.

So the worry here is simply adding one sleepy effect on top of another. Stacking magnolia with this medicine could leave you more groggy, dizzy, or unsteady than expected, and in larger amounts that matters more. Keep in mind this is theoretical and based on lab work, not human studies, so it isn't a proven danger. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.
