Doxepin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Here's the simple version: doxepin already makes you drowsy. That's actually the point when you're taking it for sleep, since it calms brain activity to help you stay asleep. Magnolia bark may have its own mild calming, sedative action, working partly through the same GABA pathways in the brain. Stack the two together and the sleepiness could add up, leaving you feeling extra groggy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady the next morning.

Keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes from lab and animal studies, not human trials, and mainly applies to large, concentrated magnolia supplement doses. Still, since both affect alertness, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you drive or feel shaky on your feet.
