Magnolia and Clobazam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Clobazam

Clobazam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) is a benzodiazepine that calms overactive electrical activity in the brain, partly by working on GABA-A receptors. Magnolia bark may gently nudge those same GABA pathways and add to that calming effect. So putting them together could leave you feeling more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady than usual, and in larger doses it could deepen that sleepy effect.

I'll be honest with you, this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, so it's more theoretical than proven in people. Everyday food amounts aren't likely the issue, but concentrated supplement doses could matter. Please don't change your seizure medicine on your own. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding magnolia.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clobazam page

“Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan, Frisium) is a benzodiazepine for seizures, so extra sedation is a real safety hazard rather than a nuisance, and that is what most of this list adds. The great majority of these supplements and herbs deepen drowsiness, alcohol in any form among the most serious pairings.”
