Levetiracetam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Here's the gist for Keppra (levetiracetam): magnolia bark contains compounds (magnolol and honokiol) that may have a mild calming, sedating effect, possibly by nudging the same GABA system in the brain. Levetiracetam can already cause drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, and sometimes mood changes on its own. Stacking a sedating supplement on top could, in theory, add to that sleepy, foggy, or unsteady feeling.

I want to be straight with you: this concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from people, so it's theoretical and tied mostly to large, concentrated magnolia doses. Levetiracetam isn't a prodrug, and magnolia doesn't change how your body clears it. Still, since seizure control matters, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding magnolia, and never adjust your Keppra on your own.

About Levetiracetam

What Is Levetiracetam Used For?

Brand names: Keppra, Elepsia XR, Spritam

Levetiracetam is used to treat several types of seizures. It treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain) and is used as add-on therapy for myoclonic seizures (sudden, brief muscle jerks) in people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy aged 12 and older, and for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures) in people with idiopathic generalized epilepsy aged 6 and older.

Age eligibility varies by product. Keppra oral and Roweepra tablets treat partial-onset seizures in patients as young as 1 month. Spritam and levetiracetam tablets for oral suspension treat partial-onset seizures in patients 4 years and older weighing more than 20 kg. Extended-release products — including Elepsia XR, Keppra XR, and Levetiracetam ER — are approved only for partial-onset seizures in patients 12 years and older. Injectable forms are used intravenously when a patient temporarily cannot take oral medication.
