Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Levetiracetam
Levetiracetam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the key thing with Keppra (levetiracetam) and kava: this isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. It's a simple piling-on effect. Levetiracetam can already make you feel drowsy, tired, dizzy, or a bit unsteady, and kava acts as a calming agent on the brain too. Put them together and those effects can stack up, leaving you more sleepy, foggy, or wobbly than usual.
This concern is well supported, and expert groups advise against mixing kava with sedating medications. There's also a separate worry worth mentioning: kava has been tied to rare liver injury. Please don't stop your seizure medication, but do talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding kava.

“I would read this page carefully rather than casually. Levetiracetam (Keppra, Spritam) controls seizures, and both hazards on this list run through that fact.”

About Kava
What is Kava?
- Anxiety and stress
- Restlessness
- Trouble sleeping
- Relaxation in social or cultural settings
- Menopausal symptoms
Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. However, kava has been linked to rare but serious liver damage, so it should be used with caution, avoided by people with liver problems, and only used after talking with your pharmacist or doctor.
About Levetiracetam
What Is Levetiracetam Used For?
Brand names: Keppra, Elepsia XR, Spritam
Levetiracetam treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). Many products also add it to other medicines for myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
Approved ages and uses differ by product. Extended-release products (Keppra XR, Elepsia XR, Levetiracetam ER) are only for partial-onset seizures in ages 12 and older. The injection is used when swallowing medicine by mouth is temporarily not possible.

Levetiracetam Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Levetiracetam as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Kava — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
